Two quakes felt near Yellowstone

JACKSON HOLE, WYO--A pair of earthquakes originating in Yellowstone National Park on Wednesday and Thursday were reportedly felt by people in the area, park officials said.

According to data from seismographic stations maintained by the University of Utah, a magnitude 3.1 temblor occurred a few minutes before 1 p.m. Wednesday. At 1:46 a.m. Thursday, a magnitude 3.2 temblor gently rattled some buildings near West Yellowstone, Mont. Both shocks were located about nine miles southeast of West Yellowstone, a park release stated.

The temblors are the latest in what officials called an "ongoing swarm" of earthquakes that began Jan. 17. Such swarms are not uncommon for the park, the statement read.
S
cientists attribute the seismic activity to slipping along a preexisting fault and do not link it to volcanic or hydrothermal activity, so if you're looking for a reason to put off am important project, cross 'Supervolcano imminent' off the excuses list.
